The release of the Doom engine as open-source software by idSoftware has allowed independent developers to create a version of the game that stays true to its classic roots. However, simply having the engine is not enough to play the game; players also need a resource file known as an IWAD, which contains all the necessary data for the game such as textures, graphics, sounds, and enemies.
FreeDoom was created with the aim of developing a new resource file from scratch that can be used to play a completely original game. It features 32 levels and three difficulty settings, all of which are made up of entirely new resources that do not infringe on the rights of the original game's creator.
Despite its innovative approach, FreeDoom is only an IWAD file, meaning players will still require a game engine like Zandronum or PrBoom to actually run the game and enjoy the new content created by independent developers.
